The demand for recycled products is rising as more and more consumers realize how small changes can add up to a better environment for us all. Roaring Spring Recycling
Roaring Spring Paper Products launched a company-wide recycling program with a massive goal to reduce landfill waste by 98 percent. This was estimated by experts to take the company over a year to accomplish. Within two months of starting the project RSPP reduced manufacturing waste by 92 percent. This is due to the dedication of the Recycling Team and also the commitment that Roaring Spring and its employees have to creating a cleaner environment.
A major part of the plant waste is material trimmed from ‚òraw‚ô product coming into the plant and from finished products that also are trimmed. Then there is plastic. RSPP was sending its plastic film or plastic shrink wrap to the land fill where it would require a minimum of 50-60 years to break down. There were also four and five tractor-trailer loads of waste products leaving the plant each week. Through research and hard work our Recycling Team was able to find a recycling firm that RSPP has partnered with to help with these issues. Since partnering the truckloads of waste have been reduced to one per month. The paper and plastic both are now being recycled which means they are no longer laying in the landfill.
With our commitment to this project, our recycling for 2008 has saved: 25,889 trees, 11 million gallons of water, 4,690.5 cubic yards of landfill space, 6.4 million KW of electricity and 93.809 pounds of air pollutants. RSPP was also recognized on behalf of the Professional Recyclers of PA (PROP), Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association (PWIA) and the Keystone Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North American (SWANA) as a recipient of a 2008 Waste Watcher‚ôs Award.
Currently RSPP is operating at 98 percent landfill free. As we strive to find new and more efficient ways to reduce our waste we are certain we will reach our goal of 100 percent landfill free.
